S3C conducts VDES trials with the Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard acknowledges that the next generation of AIS, known as VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) will soon be the logical and preferred ship-shore communication medium. In anticipation of becoming an early adopter, the Canadian Coast Guard conducted a series of field trials to verify the readiness of VDES in real-world situations. The Canadian Coast Guard deals with some of the most adverse conditions at sea, and temperatures below -22 °C were encountered during the trials along with extremely challenging meteorological conditions.

During the trial, supported by S3C personnel, the VDES theoretical data throughput was verified, and the system proved robust against interference from other ship and shore VHF systems. The performance data collected from the field trial with the Canadian Coast Guard supported the final step towards completing the VDES specifications to the IALA Working Group responsible for drafting the VDES specification.

The Canadian Coast Guard operates in some of the most inhospitable conditions at sea.
